The single reached No. 48 in the UK singles charts. The turquoise and orange 7" singles have live versions of Josephine Baker and Here's Johnny respectively on the B sides. These were recorded at The Marquee, Charing Cross Road, London earlier in 1993. The 12" single also includes a live recording from the Marquee of Bastard Chillin', together with an Andy Riley remix of Abandon Ship (Going Down mix). Other classic tracks and albums recorded at Wessex Studios include: Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks and The Clash - London Calling (album). The band played this track live on Channel 4's The Word (see it on You Tube here ). The performance was a week after Brendan left the band to form techno act DSC-GB with Stewart Home. He was replaced by two out-of-tune session-trumpeters for this performance.
Josephine Baker, the US-born jazz-age dancer and performer, has been described as the first sex symbol of modern times. During WWII she participated in the French underground, earning the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honor, and the Rosette of the Resistance medals. Back in the US after the war, she refused to perform for segregated audiences and became active in the wider civil rights movement. Following her move back to Europe she adopted twelve children from around the world whom she called her "Rainbow Tribe." A review of the single in The Guardian claimed that "it has been said that Parlophone's parent company, EMI, signed these militant anti-fascists to regain the kudos lost when the Sex Pistols were ejected from the label 17 years ago". Nice theory! NME called it "a splendidly paranoid rap-punk thingummyjig" [08.01.94].
